BFI Film Academy Norfolk & Suffolk
The BFI Film Academy provides opportunities for talented and committed young people between the ages of 16–19 to develop new skills and build a career in the film industry, no matter where they live or what their background.
For the last three years, we have been providing recruitment, project and production management to deliver film academy activities across both counties.
Client: BFI Film Academy, Culture Works East
Project: Film Education
Students of the Film Academy gain invaluable experience working alongside industry professionals who are respected practitioners in their field. They get offered hands-on filmmaking experience which helps them to develop practical knowledge and skills. We also help them explore their own creativity and passions in a supportive and dynamic environment.
Working alongside Culture Work’s learning model and educational expertise, Creative Nation have utilised their real world film making experience and network to;
- Inform recruitment across two diverse counties- introducing the courses to schools, colleges and other groups who work with the target age range including those who work with traditionally ‘hard to reach’ communities.
- Raise the profile of the courses and the brand and to build relationships between those who participate, both the professionals and the students
- Deliver courses in Great Yarmouth, Norwich and Ipswich- from sourcing venues to resourcing, planning and booking events and field trips to introducing new professional partners.
We have helped to produce two academies, one for absolute beginners (Ipswich) and one for young people with some experience (Norwich). Both courses also offer the opportunity for participants to achieve an Arts Award. Over the course of a week, they either produce a short film or a documentary, exploring all elements of film production from idea creation, through locations and casting to post production and exhibition of their final work.
We are now running subsequent academies and we wish to build upon efforts so far, to build more partnerships in order to deliver even more opportunities for young people in the region.
The opportunity to work with professional film kit is a really important part of enabling young film makers to be ready for the working environment. We are very proud to have our camera kit generously provided by Panasonic.
Since participating in the programme’s delivery across both counties, Creative Nation have helped to launch a new Academy in Ipswich and have introduced the following professional partners; Bentwaters Parks, Bruiser, Ipswich Film Theatre, University of East Anglia – Media Suite and Screen Suffolk.
